How to use the site

It’s not always intuitive how one can go about posting content to a site like this so this is the HOWTO for site members. We’ll start with things everyone can do and then set up separate pages for members who have extra privileges, say, to run one of the main Streatham Action Groups, or a separate area for a resident’s association or neighbourhood watch area.

Anyone can post content to the site forums if they’ve registered on the site and are a member. Once you’ve logged in you will see a new menu appear on the upper left of each page (see below left).

The place to post stuff - "Create content"You will then be able to post something to the a forum, comment on something someone else has posted to the site or add an event to the site calendar.

So, you may ask, how exactly does one go about doing all this? We’re glad you’ve asked! None of it is rocket science - if you can send an e-mail, you can put content on this site.

One thing you’ll notice is that the user interface (the stuff you use to post content here - text boxes, drop-down lists, etc.) works pretty much the same regardless of what you’re trying to do. OK, forum posts require you to choose a forum to post to (naturally) and events require you to select the time and date the event will happen, but otherwise, type a title in, type some text then click the big friendly “Save” button at the bottom and the site software takes care of it from there.

Let’s start from where most folk will - posting to a forum. Anything you want to post onto the site can be gotten to from the “Create content” link. If you look to the left (assuming you’re logged in) there is a sidebar block with your username on it. It has a “My Account” link where you can change your username or password, manage any notifications and subscriptions you have from the site and below it there’s a “Create Content” link. If you click on it a bit of website magic makes it slide down and reveal various things you’re able to post onto the site: Events and Forum topics. Some users are allowed to write blogs as well (contact us if you would like to write a blog about local issues). Firstly let’s look at posting to a forum.
