In the bleak midwinter... STREATHAM HUB UPDATE

As many of you will be aware from the local press, Lambeth Council and Tesco failed to respond within their original eight week deadline from our Novermber public meeting with their updated proposals for the Hub site.

We are being assured that something wil be announced in the New Year.

Streatham Action are planning a public meeting on Leisure in Streatham to discuss both the closure of the Leisure Centre, and the ongoing uncertainty about the longer-term plans for the hub.

UPDATE: 18 December

The “Future Streatham” team in Lambeth’s regeneration department sent out this message today to local stakeholders:

Dear Sir/Madam

As you know there has been considerable discussion recently about the future development in Streatham. The negotiations with Tesco have been ongoing and we are working towards a mutually beneficial outcome.

The key from our point of view is having a fantastic leisure centre and ice rink. The development will also provide affordable housing and there will be an updated store. I think we all agree that this investment is highly necessary. We are committed to ensuring that there is an ice rink available throughout the development and making facilities available for all the leisure centre users.

Our intention is to hold a public meeting early next year where we can provide a proper update and give more complete details on the progress that we are making. The negotiations are progressing well but they are also commercially confidential. Therefore a full update right now is not possible and would not be helpful to our negotiations with Tesco.

With the recent closure of the leisure centre we appreciate that getting an agreed way forward is even more important. We have been doing a full structural survey on the centre and this will help us to determine the right course of action to take.

I know that you have been very patient with us over the future of Streatham and we are very grateful for your understanding. We will come back to you with a fixed date shortly and thank you again for your patience.

Regards

Lib Peck

Cabinet Member for Housing and Regeneration

Action around the Streatham Hub

This is all getting ridiculous. Tesco made profits of £3.13bn last year and meanwhile Streatham is without a leisure centre. Who knows how much longer the ice rink can keep going.

All rather different from the values expressed in their community plan - http://www.tesco.com/talkingtesco/retailing/

where they claim to have put “have put community at the heart of how we run our business.”

Isn’t it now time to be talking about a boycott of Tesco by Streatham residents?
