Road works - Streatham High Road, Gleneagle Road and Ambleside Ave

Sent to us by TfL via email:

Ringway Jacobs, on behalf of Transport for London (TfL), has been appointed to carry out the footway and carriageway reconstruction works on the Ambleside Avenue gyratory from Streatham High Road to Tooting Bec Road. The works are scheduled to start by 26th July 2010. It is planned that the works will last for approximately 16 weeks, with different parts of the route being closed for 14 weeks. Work will generally be undertaken between 08:00 and 18:00 hours Monday to Friday and 08:00 to 13:00 on Saturdays. There will be some resurfacing works undertaken at night as these will impact some of the busier roads in the area.

The works will replace the current road base creating a much stronger and deeper foundation which will increase the strength and stability of the road. This will reduce future maintenance and also stop frequent pot holes and defects appearing for many years to come. New drains will be installed and drainage connections will be unblocked and renewed as required. A quieter carriageway running surface will also be installed which will reduce the noise of vehicles driving on it. Kerbs will also be reset and footway surfaces will be renewed creating a cleaner, neater street environment.

We appreciate that the local community needs access to this part of the road however due to the deep excavation nature of this work we are not able to maintain road access whilst works are ongoing.

From 19th July we will begin to set up site facilities. No work will take place until the following week.

From 26th July to 15th August there will be no vehicular access to Gleneagle Road (between Streatham High Road and Ambleside Avenue) or Ambleside Avenue (from Gleneagle Road to Mitcham Lane), including car park access for Pankhurst House, Churchill Lodge and Shackleton Lodge, forecourts next to Ambleside Avenue and Gleneagle Mews.

From 15th August to 28th August there will be no vehicular access to Ambleside Avenue (from Gleneagle Road to Mitcham Lane) including forecourts next to Ambleside Avenue and Gleneagle Mews, however Gleneagle Road will then be reopened to vehicles.

After 28th August Gleneagle Road and Ambleside Avenue (from Streatham High Road to Mitcham Lane) will be open to local traffic. Work will then be taking place on Ambleside Avenue between Mitcham Lane and Tooting Bec Gardens.

For deliveries etc. we suggest these are taken by vehicle to the nearest available area of road (Streatham High Road, Babington Road, Mitcham Lane) and delivered on foot via footways adjacent to the closed section of road. Footway access will be maintained at all times adjacent to road closures. Footway works will only happen in areas where there is no road closure to allow any pedestrian diversions if required. Unfortunately we cannot maintain access to on or off street car parking whilst the adjacent road is being reconstructed. We will try and open this up as soon as possible but whilst works are preventing access alternative parking should be sought.

Due to the works no through-traffic will be able to travel through Ambleside Avenue from 26th July until 2nd November. Diversion routes will be sign posted via A23 Streatham High Road – A205 Poynders Road – A24 Balham High Road, and also A216 Mitcham Lane – Southcroft Road – Mitcham Road – A24 Tooting High Street. These routes are designed to cater for general traffic and heavy goods vehicles.

Rubbish collections will still take place and our contractor is working with Lambeth Council to make arrangements for this.

I apologise in advance for any inconvenience that may be caused as a result of these essential works. Should you require further information or an update during the delivery of these works please contact our Streets Customer Services department on 0845 305 1234 or via our website at www.tfl.gov.uk/contact.

Yours faithfully
